How does one experience art? Perhaps one contemplates it, like paintings. Or views it in the round, like sculptures. Yayoi Kusama‘s multimedia work at the Phoenix Art Museum, “You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies,” requires the viewer to enter her art. In a dark room, one senses glass or a mirror, and hesitates. Curiosity prevails. As the dots of colored lights slowly grow brighter, one realizes that the tiny lights are suspended on strands from the ceiling. The lights extinguish and then again are illuminated. The viewer is surrounded by the “fireflies” of the title, finds the exit and senses a return to reality after a voyage through light and art.
